What We Treat — And Why It Matters In This Part Of New York

Hard water, iron and manganese staining, sulfur odour, sediment and bacteria are all common in Capital Region homes — on municipal supply and on private wells alike. These are the four systems that solve them, alone or in combination.

Whole-house water filtration system with sediment pre-filter, media tank and carbon post-filter

Water Filtration Systems

Whole-house filtration and reverse osmosis drinking water systems that take out sediment, chlorine, iron, sulfur and dissolved contaminants — sized to your water, not a catalogue average.

Water Softener Systems

Ion-exchange softeners that pull the calcium and magnesium out of hard water — ending scale, soap scum, spotted dishes and stiff laundry throughout the house.

Well Water Treatment

Private wells are nobody’s responsibility but yours. We test for bacteria, hardness, iron, manganese, sulfur and sediment, then build the treatment train your well actually needs.

Ultraviolet Water Treatment

UV disinfection kills bacteria, viruses and cysts as water flows past the lamp — no chemicals, no change to taste or mineral content, continuous protection for well water.

Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water

Multi-stage reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink, on its own dedicated faucet — the water you drink, cook with and make ice from, polished well past whole-house filtration.

Free Water Testing

Hardness, iron, pH, sediment, odour and colour — measured at your own tap, free of charge, before anybody recommends a single piece of equipment.

Well Water Treatment

Well Water Treatment, Albany NY & The Capital Region

Private wells draw from groundwater — the water that collects between the rock, soil, gravel and sand after rain and snowmelt. What that water picks up on the way down is entirely local: dissolved hardness minerals from limestone, iron and manganese from the surrounding rock, hydrogen sulfide, tannins from organic matter, sediment from the formation, and sometimes bacteria.

Nobody monitors a private well but its owner. There is no municipal utility testing it, no annual water quality report in the mail, and no automatic warning when something changes. That is why well treatment always starts with a test rather than a guess.

Once we know what is in your water, the treatment train follows from it — sediment pre-filtration, an iron or sulfur filter, a softener for hardness, UV where bacteria are present, and reverse osmosis at the sink if you want the drinking water polished further.

Ultraviolet Treatment

Ultraviolet Water Systems

Ultraviolet disinfection is one of the most effective ways to make water microbiologically safe. Water flows past a lamp emitting UV light at a wavelength of 254 nanometres, which damages the DNA of bacteria, viruses and cysts so they can no longer reproduce or cause illness.

The advantage of UV is what it does not do. It adds no chemicals to your water. It does not strip out beneficial minerals, and it does not change the taste or the odour. Water is safe to drink as soon as it leaves the chamber.

New York State permits UV as a primary disinfection method for private water systems, and units meeting NSF/ANSI Standard 55 Class A (or equivalent) are the ones accepted for that use. UV is normally installed downstream of filtration, because the light needs clear water to work — sediment and iron will shadow the organisms it is meant to reach.

Why Adirondack Pure

A Local Team. A Tested Recommendation.

Six reasons Capital Region homeowners call us instead of a national dealer network.

We Test Before We Sell

Every job starts with a free water test at your tap. Hardness, iron, pH, sediment, bacteria where it matters — because you cannot size a system for water nobody has measured.

Capital Region Local

We work in these six counties every week. We know the well water in Warren County, the hard municipal water in the valley, and which problems show up where.

Well Water Specialists

Municipal water is one problem. A private well with iron staining, sulfur odour and a positive bacteria test is another. Well systems are a core part of what we do, not a sideline.

Free, Written Estimates

You get the test results, the recommendation and the price in writing before anything is ordered or installed. No obligation, no pressure, no surprise line items at the end.

Service After The Sale

Salt, filter cartridges, membranes and UV lamps are part of owning a system. We show you how to handle the routine items and we are here for the ones you would rather not.

Residential & Commercial

Single-family homes, camps and seasonal properties, rentals, restaurants and small commercial buildings — the same testing-first approach scales to all of them.

FAQ

Water Treatment Questions, Answered.

The questions Capital Region homeowners ask us most often about softeners, filtration, well water and drinking water systems.

A water softener removes the dissolved calcium and magnesium that make water “hard.” Water passes through a resin bed inside the softener, and an ion-exchange process swaps those hardness minerals for a small amount of sodium. The result is water that lathers properly, rinses clean, and stops leaving scale inside your pipes, water heater, dishwasher and coffee maker.
The usual signs are spots and film on glasses and dishes, soap scum on tubs and shower doors, stiff or dingy laundry, dry skin and hair after a shower, and white crusty scale on faucets and shower heads. A rising water-heating bill is another common clue, because scale insulates the heating element. The only way to know for sure — and to size a system correctly — is a water test. Adirondack Pure tests your water at the tap for free.
Reverse osmosis (RO) pushes water under pressure through a semipermeable membrane that blocks dissolved contaminants. A typical RO system runs water through a sediment and carbon pre-filter, then the RO membrane, then a final polishing post-filter before it reaches a dedicated drinking water faucet at your sink. Many systems add a remineralization stage at the end to put beneficial minerals and taste back into the finished water.
If your well has ever tested positive for coliform bacteria or E. coli, UV is the standard fix. Ultraviolet light at 254 nanometres damages the DNA of bacteria, viruses and cysts so they cannot reproduce or make you sick. UV adds no chemicals, does not change the taste, odour or mineral content of your water, and treats continuously as water flows through. New York State accepts UV as a primary disinfection method for private wells when the unit meets NSF/ANSI Standard 55 Class A or equivalent.
For a private well in this part of New York, the usual starting panel is coliform bacteria, hardness, iron and manganese, pH, total dissolved solids and sediment or turbidity. Depending on where you are, it is also worth checking arsenic, nitrate, sulfur (that rotten-egg smell) and tannins. Private wells are not regulated or monitored by any municipal authority, so nobody tests them unless the owner does.
There is no single price, because the right system depends on what is actually in your water, how much water your household uses, and how your plumbing is laid out. A drinking-water-only reverse osmosis unit is a much smaller project than a whole-house softener, iron filter and UV system on a problem well. That is why every Adirondack Pure quote starts with a free water test and a free written estimate — so the number you get is for your water, not an average.
Check the brine tank about once a month and keep it at least a third full; most households add a few bags of salt over the course of a year. On a reverse osmosis system, the sediment and carbon filters are typically changed every six to twelve months and the RO membrane every two to five years, depending on your water. UV lamps are replaced annually. We will show you how to do all of it — or handle it for you.
