Why Capital Region Homes Filter Their Water

Water is the one thing in your house you drink, cook with, bathe in and wash everything you own in. What is dissolved in it matters. In this part of New York the usual culprits are sediment from a well or an aging main, chlorine and its by-products on municipal supply, iron and manganese that stain fixtures and laundry, hydrogen sulfide that smells like rotten eggs, and tannins that tint the water yellow-brown.

None of those are exotic. All of them are treatable — once you know which ones you actually have.

How Adirondack Pure Approaches Filtration

Step One: Test The Water

We test at your tap, free of charge. Sediment, hardness, iron, manganese, pH, odour, colour, and bacteria where a private well is involved. The results decide the system; the system does not decide the results.

Step Two: Build The Treatment Train In The Right Order

Filtration is rarely one appliance. A typical whole-house arrangement runs sediment pre-filtration first to protect everything downstream, then a specific media filter for iron, manganese or sulfur, then a softener if hardness warrants it, then ultraviolet disinfection last where bacteria are present. Getting that order wrong is the most common reason a system underperforms.

Step Three: Polish The Drinking Water

Whole-house filtration handles the water your whole home uses. For the water you actually drink and cook with, a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink takes it considerably further.

Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems

Reverse osmosis forces water under pressure through a semipermeable membrane that rejects dissolved contaminants far smaller than any cartridge filter can catch. In a typical under-sink system, water moves through several stages in sequence:

  • Sediment pre-filter — removes grit and particulate that would foul the membrane
  • Carbon pre-filter — removes chlorine, which damages the membrane, plus taste and odour compounds
  • RO membrane — the stage that removes dissolved solids
  • Post-filter — final polish on the way to a dedicated drinking water faucet
  • Remineralization (optional) — puts beneficial minerals and body back into the finished water

The result is clean, flat-tasting, contaminant-reduced water on its own tap, alongside your normal supply. Most systems also feed an ice maker or a pot-filler if you want them to.

Filtration and softening are not the same thing. A filter physically or chemically removes what is in the water. A softener uses ion exchange to take out calcium and magnesium specifically. If your complaint is scale, spotting and soap scum, you want a water softener. If it is taste, odour, colour, staining or sediment, you want filtration. Plenty of homes need both.

What A Filtration System Changes

  • Drinking water that tastes like water, not like the pipe it came through
  • No more orange-brown staining on sinks, tubs and white laundry
  • No rotten-egg smell when the hot tap runs
  • Sediment kept out of faucet aerators, valves and appliances
  • Chlorine taste and odour gone from municipal supply
  • Coffee, tea, ice and cooking that taste noticeably better

Maintenance You Should Expect

Filtration is not fit-and-forget. Sediment and carbon cartridges are typically replaced every six to twelve months depending on your water; a reverse osmosis membrane usually lasts two to five years; media filters backwash on a schedule the control valve manages for you. We will show you which items you can handle yourself and take care of the rest on request.
